ABSTRACT

Apart from Cooper's studies in the Glacier Bay area, American glacial studies languished until Field decided in 1926 to take up Reid's investigations of the 1890s. He joined the staff of the American Geographical Society in 1940 and for three decades his office was an informal headquarters for glaciologists. It became more formal when a World Data Centre for Glaciology was established there.1 Many key glaciological investigations were initiated by the Geographical Society and the Geological Survey.
