Admiral Somerville had two capital ships, Renown and Nelson, the aircraft carrier Ark Royal, four cruisers, the Edinburgh, Manchester, Arethusa and Hermione, the minelayer Manxman (serving as a cruiser), and seventeen destroyers-including one employed to escort an oiler from which the destroyers of the fleet were to oil during the voyage. There were also eight submarines at sea, patrolling off Sardinia, Sicily and Naples during the critical days of the operation (see Plan 2). The convoy of empty transports had only one destroyer for escort.
