The Gambia General Population: 330,000. Military service: none. No regular armed forces. Total budget 1964: £2,675,620 ($7,500,000). Civil Police Total strength: 560. The Gambia, which became independent on 18 February 1965, has no Army, but there is a para-military field force of about 150 men in the Police.
