ABSTRACT
We have tried to show the various conditions for the heightened visibility of a new right assault on the edifice of social democratic assumptions. In this chapter, we examine the rapid accommodation of the Labour government to the right's critique, in its selective appropriation of certain themes as a basis for its own initiatives. Throughout this period, the role of the media, and particularly of the ‘popular’ press, was exceptionally important and we look at this first.
