ABSTRACT

Between August 1941 and May 1945.40 1 outward bound convoys had carried the huge total of £428.000,000 worth of material, including 5,000 tanks. over 7.000 aircraft and quantities of munitions from Britain to North Russia. t or the 811 ships which sailed in these convoys, 720 completed their voyages; 33 turned back for various reasons and 58 (or 7·2 per cent) were sunk. The 34 westbound convoys fared better. losing 29 ships (or 4 percent) out of the 717 which sailed.' A total of 829 officers and men of tbe British and Allied merchant navies lost their JivC!.
