The firsP of the convoys [0 Russia sailed for Archangel 21st Au!>'Ust 1941 : seven ships carrying stores and the ground staff for some Hurricane aircraft that were to work with the Russians. From this small beginning developed the
r~lIJarservice of military supplies to North Russia in which 21 convoys out\l:ard and 16 homeward bouud had sailed with varying fortunes by the end of 1942.
