ABSTRACT

I was first introduced to international human resource management in the hospitality industry when working in this function in the late 1980s. Within a week of introducing a new bonus scheme for managers and staff in all the chain’s international hotels, two general managers had contacted me to discuss the scheme … The second GM contacted me from Malta. He was worried about the tight-knit, family oriented community of that island. Virtually all his staff were in some way related to each other and the scheme could cause upset among relatives – some doing well, others not so well.
