ABSTRACT

The simplest connectives have a coordinating function. They connect or coordinate two similar items of equal importance within simple or compound sentences.

She called her brother (main clause) because he was ill (subordinate clause) She called her brother (main clause) although he was ill (subordinate clause: see p. 360)

Many connectives have a subordinating function when used in complex sentences (p. 358) to introduce a dependent or subordinate clause.
