ABSTRACT

The Chilean educational system consists of the following four stages: preschool, basic (first to eighth grade), middle (first to fourth) and superior education (university, 1 professional institutes, and centers of technical formation). Enrollments in 1985 were 250,000 pupils in preschool, 2,040,557 in basic level, 661,000 in the middle schools, and 196,460 in superior education (Subsecretaria de Educatión, 1985).
