The 285 sources are arranged in chronological order, according to the year during which their contents were first made public. The following publications contain earlier descriptions of the illusion, based on unpublished documents: Birch (1756-1757), Thompson (1900), Giles (1923), Ho Peng Yoke (1966), and Wiedemann (1914).
