ABSTRACT
In what follows we first consider the early history of the illusion in chronological order, from classical times to about the end of the 17th century. We then point out some long-term historical trends, and trace several explanatory ideas from their origins to the recent past. We conclude with a brief summary of methodological and other trends that characterize the recent revival of interest in the illusion.
