ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Algeria was hit in its history by many destructive earthquakes. Among the more recent ones of October 10, 1980 in El Asnam (Mw = 7.3), of October 25, 1985 in Constantine (Ms = 6.0) and 21 May, 2003 Boumerdes (Mw = 6.8). These seismic events that have generated disastrous results showed the vulnerability of our countries face the seismic risk due to population and industrial concentration existing in northern Algeria. At the end minimize the disastrous effects of a future earthquake will strike the region, a seismic risk scenario of the city of Constantine, which is north east of Algeria has been performed in this study. This scenario is to assess: The maximum acceleration of ground motion in rock using empirical attenuation laws as earthquake of reference (earthquake Constantine 1985), the effects of sites depending on the geology of the region, damage buildings. To realize and visualize this scenario, a Geographic Information System (GIS) was developed using MapInfo 7.0 and ARCgis9.3.
