ABSTRACT

The impairment of the functions is illustrated in dramatic fashion in patients with lesions of the frontal lobes, of whom the following case is an example. Carolyn Wilson suffered from schizophrenia of for at least 11 years. Carolyn Wilson was born into a wealthy family on December 23, 1909. She went to private preparatory schools, as did Claire, her older sister and only sibling. There are many reports of Carolyn's trying to establish independence from her mother, who was herself quite dependent on her own older sister, Carolyn's aunt. Carolyn was taken in hand within a few months after her discharge by a private nurse, Mrs. Church, who happened to be renting rooms in the Wilson mansion. Aside from Carolyn's pervasive remote memory deficit, the most striking of her cognitive losses is seen in tasks requiring a flexible approach to problem solving and the ability to modify her behavior adaptively as the situation requires.
