ABSTRACT

An alternative to parent training is direct intervention with the child in residential settings. This approach has been studied by other groups. In one in-patient setting, a primarily psychoanalytic treatment program was shown to be effective for antisocial boys, but gains were quickly lost when the youngsters returned to an unchanged social environment (Redl & Wineman, 1957). Another residential program, Achievement Place, used social learning principles in the treatment. The careful evaluation conducted by Jones, Weinrott, and Howard (1981) found that children improved while in the teaching family setting, but again the gains eroded when the youngsters returned to their (untreated) families.
