ABSTRACT

In 1983 we surveyed a group of 123 insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) patients from across the country. All respondents had used Self-blood-glucose-monitoring (SBGM) for at least 1 year (Cox et al., 1984). Therefore, they were quite familiar with their blood glucose (BG) fluctuations, and factors that trigger these fluctuations. Participants were asked to indicate on a 1mm scale (1 = Not at all, 100 = Completely), “To what extent do you think stress affects your BG”? The mean rating was 63.4. The distribution was extremely negatively skewed (see Fig. 6.1), indicating that the majority of subjects believed stress did affect their BG.
