Introduction

Water not only covers three quarters of the Earth’s surface: it is also present almost everywhere below ground surface, down to considerable depths and in continuous motion. Groundwater – as we can refer to the vast majority of this subsurface water1 – is an invisible component of the hydrosphere, representing a hidden part of the water cycle. The general public is not unaware of groundwater, but usually knows hardly anything about it.
