ABSTRACT

According to the Structure Building Framework, once comprehenders lay foundations for their mental structures, they must develop those structures. They develop structures by employing two cognitive processes: Mapping and Shifting. Comprehenders map incoming information onto a developing structure or substructure when that incoming information coheres with the previous information. When the incoming information is less coherent, comprehenders employ a different process: They shift and develop a new substructure. This chapter describes the two structure-building processes of mapping and shifting.
