ABSTRACT

You are ‘reading’ for a geography degree, so it is not surprising that most time at university should(!) be spent with a book or journal or handout. Everyone reads; the knack is to read and learn at the same time so your reading time is well used. You may need to read quickly because library loan periods are short. This chapter discusses some reading techniques, asks you to reflect on and evaluate what you do now, and consider what you might do in future! As with playing the trombone, practise is required. There is a vast amount of information to grapple with in a geography degree. Reading, thinking and note-making are totally interlinked activities, but this chapter concentrates on the reading element.
