ABSTRACT

Listening is not the same as hearing, it is a more active and interactive process. Listening involves being ready to absorb information, paying attention to details, and the capacity to catalogue and interpret the information. In addition to the actual material and support cues, like slides and OHTs, there is information in the speaker’s tone of voice and body language. As with reading, the greater your geographical background, the more you are likely to understand, which means that listening is a skill involving some preparation, a bit like parachuting.
