ABSTRACT

Fieldtrips are one of the great bonuses of GEES degrees. The occasional student confuses a fi eld-class with a fantastic holiday with mates, but the staff have a wellplanned learning agenda for you. Costs are an issue, be clear about them at open days, and briefi ngs. GEES departments donate a considerable proportion of their budgets to fund the teaching of fi eldwork and fi eld mapping exercises because they are convinced it: J develops observation and research skills; J gives a realistic insight into research activities; J allows hands-on, practical experience of fi eld techniques; J encourages individuals to take responsibility for research decisions; J develops group and interpersonal skills; J encourages students to talk through research issues with staff in small group

research work; J allows students to experience some unfamiliar environments. Students usually pay for travel, some accommodation and food costs. Your department will provide detailed briefi ngs including costs at open days, in handbooks and online, as well as safety information for each trip.
