ABSTRACT

Maps and diagrams save words; they are good value, especially in exam answers where time is short. Plotting, sketching or mapping GEES information exemplifi es and clarifi es relationships.

Everyone doing science or map work at school learns about labelling, scales, legends, keys and titles because every map and diagram must have them. Lecturers cannot give full marks if they are missing. This is not because life is grossly unfair, which it is, but because geographers, environmental and earth scientists always label all maps and diagrams correctly! The skill here is to give careful, consistent attention to detail and completeness. Don’t forget to acknowledge sources with references in fi gure titles, as in ‘Figure x ... title ... (after Penman and Wipe 2020)’. See also Chapter 18.3, p. 192 for advice on presenting fi eld notebooks.
