ABSTRACT

The multimodal perception of an object is the ability to perceive different pieces of information extracted by the sensory modalities in a unified way. This makes it possible for us to perceive objects as unitary and stable entities in time and space. This ability is remarkable because the amodal properties of objects such as shape and texture are specified in strikingly different ways in the tactual and visual modalities. What are the developmental origins of the capacity to perceive amodal properties of objects through touch and vision?
