ABSTRACT

The ontogeny of intersensory competencies, their plasticity, and the neural/psychological mechanisms that might underlie multisensory integrative behaviour have become issues of importance for both developmental neurobiologists and psychologists working with young (and adult) humans and nonhumans (Mendelson, 1979; Tees & Buhrmann, 1989; Turkewitz, chap. 1, this volume; Turkewitz & Mellon, 1989). In this regard there are several kinds of cross-modal phenomena that have been under investigation in developing organisms.
