Memory Span and Memory Load Tasks

In addition to describing Rajan's abilities, we relate his performance to the theory of skilled memory developed by Chase and Ericsson (e.g., Chase & Ericsson, 1981, 1982). They proposed three general principles for skilled memory and illustrated these principles with subjects having particular expertise (e.g., Ericsson & Polson, 1988). These three principles are meaningful encoding (the use of preexisting knowledge to encode the presented information), retrieval structure (explicitly attaching retrieval cues to the encoded material to allow efficient retrieval) and speed-up (a reduction in study time with further practice).
