Non-Numeric Performance

In the last chapter, we showed that Raj an's performance on tasks involving the memorization of strings of digits is outstanding. The question is whether that skill transfers to other memory tasks. Research on skilled performance (e.g., Chase & Ericsson, 1981, 1982) suggests that such performance is restricted to a welldefined set of materials. Consistent with that research, we found that Rajan's memory span for digits increased to about 60 digits while his memory span for letters remained at approximately 13 letters.
