ABSTRACT

Figure 11.24 shows the exact variation of t.t with 0. Observe that for tones with a frequency in excess of 2,000 Hz, the period is less than 0.5 ms. This can result in confusion because it is not clear which of the two pressure waves at the ears is ahead of the other. This can lead to sizable errors in locating the source, as illustrated in Fig. 11.25. The actual onset of the sound, of course, gives the correct result, namely that the left ear lags right by t.t. The fine structure of the rest of the wave can be interpreted either as left lags the right by t.t or the left leads the right by T - t.t. The second interpretation of what is happening, of course, shifts the estimate of the source from being to the right of straight ahead, the correct conclusion, to the left of straight ahead, which often is a rather serious error.
