ABSTRACT

At the basal end of the scala vestibuli is a second membrane, round this time, that again interfaces air. This is known as the round window. Its role is explained later.

In cross section, the inner tube looks somewhat triangular in shape, as shown in Fig. III.4. Its top wall is a somewhat flexible membrane known as Reissner's membrane. Part of the bottom wall is also a somewhat flexible membrane known as the basilar membrane. The basilar membrane is held rigidly in bony extensions from the wall of the cochlea, as shown in the longitudinal section in Fig. 111.3. At the basal end, the membrane is narrow and stiff; at the apical end it is both wider and considerably more flaccid.
