ABSTRACT

The relatively common hearing loss associated with aging, especially in men, is likely to be multifaceted-including some mix of problems with the functioning of the ossicles, changes in the characteristics of various membranes of the system, especially the basilar membrane, and loss of some hair cells, especially those at the basal end. Little is known about aging processes of central systems. Why these hearing troubles are somewhat sex linked (see Fig. IV .8) is not fully understood, although it may be partially due to be differential exposure to noise.
