ABSTRACT

Certain striking inconsistencies exist between the two kinds of results, and several approaches, both theoretical and experimental, exist to try to bridge the local and global phenomena.

2. LOCAL PSYCHOPHYSICS

2.1 Detection, Discrimination, and Identification Procedures

For the most part local psychophysical studies involve experimental designs in which, on each trial of the experiment, one or two limited time intervals are designated during which one of two distinct stimuli is presented in each interval. The observer indicates to the experimenter which interval he or she believes contained which signal. This is usually done by pressing one of two keys.
