Again the question is whether or not one hears the 400 Hz component in the distorted sum. Most people do.
So far, the evidence is not inconsistent with the idea that our hearing systems are carrying out a spectral analysis of the distorted waves, although clearly some trouble exists in isolating the higher harmonics.
