ABSTRACT
Early stages of acquisition are characterized by the absence of various elements that are required in adult speech, specifically functional elements such as determiners, complementizers, grammatical prepositions, auxiliaries, and the like. Various theoretical positions have been taken in the recent literature with respect to this lack of grammatical elements.
