ABSTRACT

A refl ection on the future of MIDI by Nathan van der Rest, masters student at the University of Colorado Denver.

It is astonishing to think that after 30 years, MIDI is still as relevant today as it was when it was fi rst introduced. What is even more astonishing is that in the 30 years that MIDI has been around, it has changed only slightly. MIDI has been able to stay relevant through all of the major changes in the music industry without having to go through dramatic changes in order to adapt. The original MIDI Spec, which is still in implementation today, is largely the same as it was in the fi rst few years of development. Not many other forms of technology have achieved the same overall success that MIDI has.
