ABSTRACT
This chapter is concerned with prosody. The term is usually used with reference to the suprasegmental properties of verbal communication. Terms such as speech melody, intonation, speech rhythm, tone of voice, and stress are also used to refer to these properties. Prosody involves variation in the acoustic properties of the speech signal that does not contribute to phonemic differentiation.
