ABSTRACT
Verb agreement is an expression, marked on the verb, of the relationship between a noun and that verb. Crosslinguistically, a verb agreement marker reflects semantic and/or grammatical features of the noun it refers to. The noun(s) whose features are represented in the agreement marker(s) are called the controller(s) of agreement. In (1), both the subject and the object are controllers of agreement, hence the verb has two agreement slots. The subject and its agreement marker are italicized; the object and its agreement marker are boldfaced. Notational conventions for examples are given in the Appendix.
