ABSTRACT

In retrospect, the latter half of the twentieth century saw the gradual but uneven emergence of a more liberalized world trading system. Some have argued (Hirst and Thompson 1999) that this period was broadly comparable to the era of freer trade in the latter part of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. World trade growth has been higher than growth in production since 1950, and especially since 1985.
