ABSTRACT

Broadcasting in Japan is controlled by two types of organisations. NHK, the publicly funded public service broadcasting organisation, is by far the most important of these two types. It is funded through a licence fee system and is required to present high quality programmes that satisfy the demands of the public and also elevate the cultural level of the country. It runs two television services, the General Channel and the Educational Channel, which are available to nearly all of Japan's 38 million households.
