ABSTRACT

Tim DeChristopher is a student and climate activist from the US. He became popular after he had participated in an auction for gas and oil drilling rights in Utah in December 2008. He bought 13 parcels of land for 1.7 million dollars, although he had no money to pay for them. He also participated in other biddings on the day and thus raised their price. The aim of DeChristopher’s special form of protest was to act against the oil and gas industry and to prevent local drilling. Because of the manipulation of an auction and false testimony, in July 2011 he was sentenced to a fine of 10,000 dollars and two years in prison.
