ABSTRACT
One of the important tasks performed by the sensory system is the segmentation of the sensory stream. In this chapter, I discuss the mechanisms through which the field of vision is divided into separate parts. A special meaning is attributed to one part, the figure, which we refer to as being extracted from the background.
