ABSTRACT

In this chapter we discuss sequential data analytic methods that can help clarify the complex interrelation of an infant’s and an adult’s behavior during social interaction. We do this primarily by way of a worked example drawn from our recent study of early communicative development of !Kung San infants. This may seem, at the onset, to be a rather straightforward endeavor. Thus, before we turn our attention to our central concern, it is useful to begin with a reminder of how difficult, if not impossible, it is to abstract procedures from substance.
