ABSTRACT
THE preceding chapter has considered two nonovert forms of schizophrenia, the transitional phases of increasing decompensation into (incipient) and progressive recovery from (remitting) overt schizophrenia. In view of the shifting level of adjustment and active struggle against personality disorganization observed in incipient and remitting schizophrenic disturbances, these conditions are categorized in Chapter 15 as acute disorders. Schizophrenia also appears in nonovert forms that are chronic in nature and, unlike incipient and remitting schizophrenia, comprise neither transitional nor ego-alien phenomena. Two types of chronic nonovert schizophrenia, borderline and pseudoneurotic, are the subject of this chapter.
