ABSTRACT

Given what I have just said, it is ironic, and scientifically counterproductive, that stress and emotion remain almost completely separate and independent research literatures. Those whose work is focused on stress and coping tend not to read or cite the large amount of work done on the emotions. By the same token, those whose work is focused on the emotions give little or no attention to the large stress and coping literature. This is all part of the troubling fractionation of our discipline, with its mountains of publications, most of which fail to come to the attention of either research group.
