Application 9: Testing for Invariant Pattern of Causal Structure

In the present chapter, we examine another approach to cross-validation. Specifically, we use an invariance-testing strategy to test for the replicability of structural paths across groups. Although there are numerous approaches to cross-validation in structural equation modeling, depending on the focus of one's study (see Anderson & Gerbing, 1988; Browne & Cudeck, 1989; Cudeck & Browne, 1983), the application described here is straightforward in addressing the question of whether a model that has been respecified in one sample replicates over a second independent sample from the same population (for another approach, in addition to the one demonstrated in chapter 4, see Byrne & Baron, 1994).
