ABSTRACT
The most important context for technological advance was the existence within merchant capitalism of industry organized on capitalist lines by entrepreneurs employing wage labour and producing commodities for sale in regional and national markets. In addition, the capital that had been accumulated through trading provided the means for entrepreneurs to finance investment in the capital-intensive but highly productive technology of the Industrial Revolution.
