ABSTRACT

At the same time, growth rates of MVA have been lowest in the poorest countries. In Sun-Saharan Africa the growth of manufacturing has been particularly slow. In 1975 manufactured production represented 5 per cent of the GDP of the Sun-Saharan African LDCs as opposed to 16 per cent for the Asian ones and 25 per cent of those in Latin America and the Caribbean. By 2000 the comparable figures were approximately 13 per cent for the Sun-Saharan African LDCs, 26 per cent for Asia (29 per cent in East Asia, 14 per cent in South Asia), and 19 per cent for Latin America and the Caribbean.
