ABSTRACT

Manufacturing edge cities produce durable and nondurable goods. The U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) created the Standard industrial classifications (SIC) codes to describe economic enterprise and measure economic performance such as the number of establishments and employment. SIC codes organize industries by divisions (single-digit codes) and major groups (two-digit codes). OMB further divides industries into industry groups (three-digit codes) and industry numbers (four-digit codes). This study aggregated major durable and nondurable manufacturing groups, two-digit SIC codes, and measured the employment as a percentage of total employment in the edge city. Manufacturing edge cities employ higher proportions of workers in SIC code industries 20 through 39, except SIC code 27 (printing, publishing, and allied products), which was grouped with information Service industries (see Table 2.2).
