ABSTRACT
In Chapter 1, we explained that a major function of CDA was to investigate how discourse helped to maintain power structures and support discrimination. In this chapter, we focus on the significance of language in classifying people with respect to their place in power structures and on how powerful groups, sometimes with the tacit ‘co-operation’ of the less powerful, can use language to maintain inequality.
