ABSTRACT

The results have been coming in from experiments on empty categories in sentence processing, and there seems to be a general willingness to regard them as bearing on the truth of theoretical linguistic claims. Though I have disagreed (Fodor, 1989) with some of the interpretations that have been proposed, I applaud the general research strategy of trying to use psycholinguistic findings to answer linguistic questions. Not all psycholinguistic findings are suitable for this purpose, of course, and nor are all linguistic issues, but the empty category project seems to have just the right properties to succeed.
