Transparency and Visibility: Sentence Processing and the Grammar of Anaphora: Andrew Barss
INTRODUCTION In her stimulating chapter, Janet Fodor addresses the relation between
grammatical theory and sentence processing research, making a number of concrete proposals concerning the degree of fit between recent experimental findings and contemporary syntactic theories. In these remarks, I would like to focus on two major arguments of Fodor's paper, and in doing this I will try to comment both on specific aspects of her analysis and on the general approach. I hope my discussion here will advance the integration of theoretical research in grammatical theory and empirical studies of language processing. My remarks here will in part be cautionary, however.
