ABSTRACT

Thus far, we have examined the various types of linguistic change, and considered the consequences of such changes in the form of dialects and language families. In this chapter and the next, we’ll be turning our attention to the historical methods, the principal methods which linguists have developed in order to establish that certain languages are genetically related and to recover the histories of individual languages and of language families.
