ABSTRACT

The specific method of family psychotherapy in the treatment of schizophrenia which will be described here was developed as an integral part of a theoretical premise about the nature and origin of schizophrenia. The theoretical premise was later extended to "a family concept of schizophrenia," and more recently to "a family theory of emotional illness." Much of the theoretical and background material has been reported in Bowen, Dysinger, Brodey and Basamania (1957); Bowen (1959); and Bowen, Dysinger and Basamania (1959). The family concept of schizophrenia is discussed in Bowen (1960) and family psychotherapy with schizophrenia in Bowen (1961).
